Dhakeshwari National Temple

Dhakeshwari Temple is a Hindu temple in Dhaka City of Bangladesh. It is state-owned of being ‘National Temple’ of Bangladesh’s. The meaning of “Dhakeshwari means “Goddess of Dhaka”. The Dhakeshwari Temple has believed status as most important Hindu place of worship during the Bangladesh Liberation War.

Dhakeshwari Temple was built in the 12th century by Ballal Sen. He was a king of the Sena dynasty. Myths say that Ballal Sen once dreamt of the goddess covered under the jungle. Ballal Sen uncovered the deity and built this temple on that place. Since that time Hindu religious believe Dhakeswari to be the supervising god.

There is a known that the temple is one of the Shakti Peethas. Here the jewel from the crown of the Goddess Sati had fallen. Since that time the temple has been held great importance.

Dhakeshwari Temple is a center of socio-cultural as well as Hindu religious activity. The largest celebration of Durga Puja is held at the National Temple in every year. The Members of Parliament of Bangladesh come to felicitate the Bangladeshi Hindu society from the temple premises. The Janmashthami procession most important event of the year which starts from Dhakeshwari temple and go on throughout the streets of old Dhaka.

There are is two types of architecture within the premises of the Dhakeswari . The present temple is two hundred years old. This part was built during East India Company period by an agent. The olden one is of the Poncharotna Goddess Durga’s.


It is judged a necessary part of cultural heritage of Dhaka. The numerous renovations, rebuilding and repairs changed the old look of this temple.

Dhakeshwari Temple is located just right at the back the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology premise. The communication to reach this place is very easy by bus or personal vehicle. It takes one and forty minutes time from international airport of Bangladesh.
