Dhanmondi Shahi Eidgah – Mughal Eidgah, Dhaka

The Dhanmondi Shahi Eidgah Bengali: (মুঘল ঈদগাহ) is also called Mughal Eidgah. It is located at Saat Masjid road in Dhanmondi residential area of Dhaka in Bangladesh. It is a city open space and mosque. It was built in 1640 CE.  It has been in use for Eid festivities since. Abu Sayeed M Ahmed wrote that this Eidgah is the oldest existing Mughal monument in Dhaka city. He was conservationist architect of Bangladesh. There is other one with the architectural forms and features alike to it.

The Mughal Eidgah is an enormous structure built through the Mughal Empire. The Mughal subehdars and diwans were living in this city. They used to come here for Eid prayers twice a year. The fish traders used to organize lights here. There are thousands of people used to meet and have imposing banquets. The structure of Dhanmondi Eidgah is an example of Mughal architecture.

The Eidgah is a platform measuring one hundred and forty eight feet long. It was square in plan, with thick brick walls surrounding the patio on all side but east. It was bedecked with multi-cusped archway and sided. It is founded in the 4th century. This Eidgah first received major status in 1610. In that period the Mughals shifted the capital from Rajmahal to Dhaka. It renamed as Jahangirnagar. During the Mughal period, Dhaka became the head of business capital.

The surrounding wall was maybe partly punctured. These had a chain of wall cresting with additional elements decorating the bends. The probable parts of the walls and the retreating sections are on the western wall. Though these had structural reason to be there, but their assignment and shapes contribute to the artistic too.

Dhanmondi Shahi Eidgah is the structure located at Dhanmondi 6A in Dhaka city. It is a listed archaeological site of the Department of Archaeology.
